The Stony Brook University football team in New York visited with students at an elementary school and handed out Easter hams to people in need. University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee staff and students hosted a neighborhood cleanup. St. Catherine University in St. Paul, Minnesota, showcased their Healthy Food + Healthy Living program at a local farmers’ market. University of Georgia–Athens conducted memory screenings and measured retinal health at a county facility.

All these good works and so much more — from Oregon to Clemson, South Carolina and beyond — were part of the inaugural International #CampusandCommunity Day sponsored by the International Town & Gown Association (ITGA) on April 13, 2022.

The brainchild of Joan Dickinson, MA, assistant vice president of university and hospital community relations at Stony Brook, the event invited campuses and their host cities or towns to showcase the collaborations and partnerships in which they already are engaged or to plan a #CampusandCommunity event specifically for that day. Then it all got showcased on Twitter!

Dickinson urges ITGA members to continue using social media platforms — with the hashtag #CampusandCommunity — to promote their efforts to build relationships and improve the places where they live, work and study.

ITGA Executive Director Beth Bagwell agrees. “Campus and Community Day was a special time to celebrate town-gown partnerships and highlight the work of our ITGA members and partners,” Bagwell says. “It was motivational and inspiring to see the many posts and the unique ways partnerships were displayed and celebrated throughout the day.

“I look forward to next year’s event!”
