John Nichols was elected College Station’s 16th mayor in 2022, following a decade of service as a City Council member from 2012-22. A retired professor emeritus from Texas A&M University, he leverages his deep academic background and extensive municipal experience to guide the City’s strategic growth and fiscal policies.
His leadership spans several key boards and committees, including serving as chair of the Audit Committee and the Bryan/College Station Metropolitan Planning Organization. Nichols is also a member of the Brazos Valley Economic Development Corporation and the Brazos Valley Solid Waste Management Agency, playing a significant role in shaping the area’s economic and infrastructural future.
Nichols’ history of community service reflects more than five decades of civic engagement. A member of the Noon Lions Club since 1970, he has also chaired the Planning and Zoning Commission and the Parks and Recreation Board.
Nichols holds a bachelor’s degree and a doctorate from Cornell, as well as a master’s from Michigan State. His education and many years on campus provide a unique and valuable perspective on the "town and gown" relationship between College Station and Texas A&M.
