An art professor’s journey through Italy has inspired a unique creative challenge at Ohio Northern University. In the Visual Literacy classroom, students are dreaming up their own 21st century “utopia,” using five historic Italian towns as a launchpad for their own visions.

Recent articles in Forbes help illuminate the difference a storyline can make in terms of work that seeks to strengthen town-town relationships. We begin with a conceptual model that guided the construction of the articles, with attention is given to the ideal of the harmonious relationship. Next, the planning activities taking place between municipal and university leaders in Ohio and Iowa are discussed. An overview of storytelling for other purposes in town-gown activities is followed by a discussion of steps that are being taken to highlight other issues emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic. May 4, 1970 is often referred to as “the day the war came home.” Four students were killed, and nine students were injured when the Ohio National Guard opened fire during a protest. For 50 years, practice of the 1st and 2nd Amendment has been an issue on many college campuses. This presentation will recount perspectives on the history of that fateful day and relate it to what we’re facing in modern times.
